The World Bank changed its gold benchmark in June 2025: recent months average daily spot prices; earlier months use the London afternoon-fixing series described in the workbook. Treat comparisons across this boundary with that methodology change in mind. The archive is not adjusted for inflation.

Use the euro gold reference to compare fine weight, bullion premiums and separate Ankauf and Verkauf offers from German dealers.
For a German gold comparison, distinguish the weight of the whole object from its fine-gold content. A jewellery item stamped 585 contains a different fraction of gold from a 999.9 bullion bar. When a seller states a coin’s fine-gold weight, use that figure directly; do not multiply it by the fineness a second time. When only the alloy’s total weight is given, the purity must be applied once.
The dashboard expresses the international reference in euros. “Feingold” refers to fine gold, “Feingewicht” to fine-metal weight and “Raugewicht” to total weight in the terminology used for a comparison. A product listing should make clear which weight it gives. This is particularly useful for older alloyed coins, where the gross weight can exceed the gold content being priced.
In a dealer’s price list, establish whether the column is the dealer’s buying offer or selling offer. When you sell to the dealer, the buying side is relevant. When you buy from the dealer, the selling side is relevant. Compare both for the same product and time to understand the spread. A low selling premium tells only part of the story if the current repurchase terms are less favourable.
For an online purchase, compare the complete delivered price with a local collection offer. Packaging, payment method and delivery insurance can affect the total. Ask whether the dealer locks the price when the order is placed, when payment is received or at another defined point. Keep that agreement with the product invoice.
Section 25c of Germany’s VAT Act defines qualifying investment gold and its tax treatment. It includes bars or wafers of accepted market weights with at least 995 fineness, and qualifying coins under separate criteria. The term should not be applied to every gold object. Jewellery and collectible products require their actual classification to be considered.
The Frankfurt, Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and other city rows use the same EUR reference. Germany, France and Italy can also share the same international euro metal value while offering different finished products and transaction terms. The ECB describes its exchange references as informational, which is a useful reminder that a published conversion is not necessarily a bank’s executable payment rate.
For scrap or inherited jewellery, compare written offers for the same lot. Separate the accepted gold weight, fineness and deductions from any independent value of stones, workmanship or collectibility. Melting everything into one metal figure can obscure those differences.
Compare the related Italy and France gold guides for their local product-marking and transaction context while retaining a common euro reference.
Feingewicht is the fine-metal content; Raugewicht is the whole item’s weight. For a gold-content calculation, use a stated fine-gold weight directly. If you instead start with total alloy weight, multiply by the declared or assessed gold fraction once.
From the dealer’s perspective, Ankauf is buying and Verkauf is selling. If the dealer is buying your item, its Ankauf offer is the relevant side. Confirm that the quoted figure applies to your product and includes all stated deductions.
Only after accounting for fineness. A simple metal comparison uses the net alloy weight multiplied by 0.585 and the pure-gold per-gram reference. Stones and other non-gold components need separate treatment, and the result is not the dealer’s payable offer.
The product premium does not have to scale directly with weight. Compare complete prices per gram for the actual bar sizes, including delivery. A smaller bar may carry a different manufacturing or selling premium while using the same metal reference.
Section 25c UStG sets the investment-gold criteria, including 995-or-higher fineness for specified bars or wafers and separate conditions for coins. Check the actual product against those conditions instead of relying only on an advertising label.
No. The coin criteria in section 25c cover matters including fineness, minting date, legal-tender status and normal selling price relative to gold content. Jewellery and a coin outside the qualifying definition should not automatically receive the same classification.
They are city entries using the same national EUR reference. A dealer’s price can differ because of the item and transaction terms. Compare actual offers before treating that difference as a separate local benchmark.
Check that the certificate describes the exact bar or coin, including any serial or identifying details. A document for a different item is not useful evidence. Ask how the dealer authenticates products and handles a mismatch before committing to a purchase.
Identify the coin’s fine-gold quantity, multiply that by the matching reference and compare the complete product price. A collectible premium or a different issue can change the comparison. Do not use the face value stamped on the coin as its metal value.
Compare who bears the risk in transit, when the price becomes binding and how the weight and fineness are agreed. Request the process in writing. A headline per-gram offer can be less informative than the final amount and the conditions for rejecting it.
A US report may quote dollars, a different time or another series. Match the underlying gold measure and apply a consistent currency basis before comparing percentage moves. A euro conversion can move differently when the exchange rate changes.
A metal calculation provides one reference. The item may need separate assessment for stones, workmanship, provenance or collectibility. Obtain a relevant appraisal or product-specific buying offer before accepting a scrap valuation for the whole object.
