What karat describes
Karat describes the proportion of gold in an alloy on a scale of 24. The theoretical gold fraction of 22K is 22/24, or about 91.67%. Fineness markings express the fraction on a scale of 1,000; for example, a 916 quotation refers to a stated fineness of 916 parts per thousand.
A price calculation is a reference
If a pure-gold reference is 100 currency units per gram, a theoretical 22K metal value is 100 × 22 ÷ 24, or about 91.67 per gram. These are deliberately illustrative numbers, not current market prices. The website performs this calculation only where the selected source does not supply an independently handled purity quotation.
Why a finished item can cost more
Jewellery also involves design, manufacturing, distribution and selling costs. The invoice may treat stones, taxes and making charges separately. A lower purity does not guarantee a lower total price for two differently designed items.
What to check
Compare the same gold weight and stated purity. Ask which components are included in the weight and request the full payable price. For a buyback comparison, ask about deductions, testing and the dealer’s purchasing rate. The dashboard is a reference tool and does not authenticate an item’s purity.
